Marta Castelo and Pablo Díaz are two artists coming together as a duo for the first time in the project "The sound hidden in the clods", selected for the Art and Technology residencies in Trafaria in 2024.
Marta Castelo, a visual artist and researcher at Vicarte, also teaches Ceramic Studio in the Science and Art of Glass and Ceramics Master’s program. Through her artistic and research projects, she works with natural materials, either for use in ceramics or as a medium to highlight and reflect on the natural landscape that surrounds us. Among her works, the project *Limits of Consistency* stands out.
Pablo Díaz, a Chilean craftsman, completed his master’s thesis in Sound Art at the University of Barcelona, focusing on the organology of raw clay. Currently, he is conducting research on overfired clay and sound sculpture at VICARTE. Last year, he developed a project on raw clay ("SEGREDA") in collaboration with the Clay Association at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chile, and he is in constant pursuit of opportunities to engage with this material, which he considers boundless and infinitely versatile.
As a duo, Marta Castelo and Pablo Díaz engage in a multidisciplinary exploration that blends geological matter with sound, fostering connections with the local community and building bonds with the residents of Trafaria through reciprocal interaction between artists, arts, and audience.
Sound prompts an immediate reaction in listeners, and by applying sound technology to soil clods, they aim to spotlight the subtle aspects of these materials, reclaiming and valuing the senses and perceptions that often go unnoticed. This project enhances the aesthetic value of simple things, like a clod of soil, through accessible, modern, and open-source technologies. This project serves as an invitation to the community to explore and enjoy their surroundings with what is readily available.
