Deep Waters is a meditative performance that immerses audiences in sound, light, and the subconscious, inviting participants into a space of deep listening: a practice of attentive, intentional hearing and focus. Using water as both medium and metaphor, the work explores the balance between natural soundscapes and the growing intrusion of human-made noise.
In Deep Waters, sound and light become bridge between the known and the mysterious. The performance is rooted in hydrophone recordings and live, real-time sounds and synthesis, including underwater noise pollution. These sounds, often invisible to human ears, are amplified and transformed, showing both the meditative and the disturbed states of our underwater world.
Light plays across the surface and through the water, refracting and scattering and challenging the nature of our perception. The interconnection of sound and light creates a sensory experience that encourages introspection, connection, and a heightened awareness of the present moment, while also confronting the audience with the fragility of marine ecosystems.
What do we hear when we truly listen? How does the act of deep listening change our relationship to the world and to the unseen impacts of human activity? By focusing on the meditative qualities of water, sound, and light, the performance offers a moment of stillness, urging us to listen more deeply: to the ocean, to each other, and to the urgent call for greater care in our shared environment. It becomes a space for reflection on the beauty and vulnerability of the underwater world, and the responsibility we bear for its future.
