Algorithms in Reflection is an interactive AI-powered installation of two mirrors that respond to emotion, one to happiness, the other to sadness. Using cameras and CNNs trained on FER-2013 dataset, they assess the “authenticity” of each expression, raising or lowering blinds to reveal or hide the viewer’s reflection. We already perform emotions socially, but does it feel different when we must convince AI? As we do, the mirrors reflect us back, reminding us of our own nature as social beings.
Freddie Hong is a London-based computational artist and researcher exploring how emerging technologies shape our physical and social interactions. With a PhD in HCI, he critically examines art, AI, and digital systems through interactive works that invite audiences to reflect on how machines influence perception, behaviour, and relationships, foregrounding embodied experience in an age of automation.
