“What does your inner world look like?” This question was posed by artist Lauren Moffatt to women from different parts of the world as a starting point for Local Binaries. Drawing inspiration from meditation and art therapy techniques such as body mapping, the participants focused on their inner state, describing it as a landscape. They imagined geological shapes, sounds, plants, weather systems and architecture to express their inner states to the artist. Working with AI, Moffatt visualised the landscapes, painted images by hand and animated them in 3D game engines to create a vast virtual universe that weaves together the different inner worlds and narratives.
This work invites the audience to engage and interact with this shared, introspective, and intimate space through a multisensory experience enhanced by augmented reality (AR). The act of describing one’s inner state is a ritual of resistance against a high-pressure environment that demands efficiency and production.
