Join us for a conversation with artists and curators from the PLAY(THE)GROUND residency, which took place over the summer of 2024. This residency, organized by the collective @maisunomaisum, invited artists and creators across disciplines to immerse themselves in collaboration with local communities, exploring the theme INFORMALITY AS RESISTANCE.
The discussion will be held on Sunday, November 10th, from 4 pm to 5 pm at Convento dos Capuchos in Almada, as part of the Festifal Periphera by @trafariacriativa.
PLAY(THE)GROUND is a multidisciplinary residency designed for individuals seeking space, dedicated time, and vibrant dialogue to initiate or advance projects that engage with the unique areas around Lisbon. Open to artists, curators, researchers, collectives, and practitioners from varied backgrounds, the residency encourages collaborative, experimental work connected to local landscapes and communities.
In 2024, the residency focused on INFORMALITY AS RESISTANCE, a theme deeply intertwined with the cultural dynamics of peripheral Lisbon. Four locations — Talude and Quinta da Fonte (Loures), Zambujal (Amadora), and Trafaria (Almada) — hosted these projects. Each of these sites, rich in diverse cultures and informal practices, stands as a testament to resilience, continuously inspiring new urban imaginaries.
In Trafaria, the residency featured artists SARA E TRALHA (PT), DIANA FERRO (IT), SARAH KILGALLON (US), LUCIANO B (AR), VARDIT GOLDNER (IL), ALICE F. MARTINS (PT), and ALEXANDER GARCIA (COL), who explored informality’s role in the community.
What forms does informality take? Does resistance preserve, transform, or enable survival and emancipation? How does the knowledge within informality differ from formal structures, and why? What are the embodied emotions of (in)formality, and where does it live within us? What is the power of the informal, and what risks threaten it? What new worlds emerge from the intersection between formal and informal realms?
