Generative Art: There's Generativity Beyond Artificial Intelligence!

In this presentation, we will explore generative art, highlighting its autonomy from recent advancements in Artificial Intelligence and emphasizing its historical and pre-computational roots. "Generative art" refers to creative processes in which the materialization of the artwork is partially or entirely delegated to an autonomous system, following a set of rules or parameters predefined by the artist. Although in recent years the term "generative" has gained prominence in the discourse surrounding Artificial Intelligence, its use in the field of computational art is independent of that relationship and dates back to the 1960s. Georg Nees and Vera Molnar were some of the pioneers in using computers as a tool to create art, paving the way for what would become crucial in the development of modern digital generative art. To conclude, we will present some of the most significant works of Pedro Alves da Veiga, who develops complex computational systems and explores characteristics such as interaction, controlled randomness, and audiovisual remixing. However, the artist does not limit himself to aesthetic and technological exploration, seeking to develop each work as a critical reflection on impactful themes in contemporary society, thus combining technique, aesthetics, and function, considering each piece (also) as a means of communication and intervention.
